So tomorrow is my first real day as a freelancer. Design / finance / business / marketing… everything is now down to little ‘ol me from now on. Should I be nervous or excited? Should I be gung-ho or cautious?
There’s lots of emotions whizzing around my mind but for the most part it’s exciting. If you get past the trepidation and feeling of the unknown, it’s actually empowering to know that everything is now under my control. It’s now only my direction that counts. It’s my business (wow, that sounds weird), and it’s my decisions that result in its success or failure!
With over a decade’s experience in the design industry, I’m hoping I’ve earned my stripes and have enough about me to make my freelance venture a positive one. I have great friends and family supporting me on lots of exciting possibilities so it’s head down and full steam ahead.
Are there any other freelancers out there who can recount their first feelings when going it alone? I’d love to hear from you about your experiences and any tips you may have.

Just discovered your wonderful work! I always wondered who did those graphics for trend sites!
Congrats on your big move. One year ago in Oct. 2011 I made a similar career change and sounds like we have a lot in common in terms of experience as well! It’s definitely been a wild ride going back to freelance but I’m more sure than ever that it was the right decision, I love doing my own designs and getting back to developing my style.
